Episode 8: Mad about Universal Monsters

Who doesn't love the Universal Monsters? Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolfman, the Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon - if you're like us, you grew up spending Saturday nights glued to the TV screen, watching these classic horror films. On August 28th, Universal will release a 30 film collection with all films in blu-ray format! Yeah, OK, they did release an 8 film set a few years ago...but this has got everything!

In celebration, your crew has sought out renowned horror film host, Lord Blood-Rah, to discuss our favorite Universal monsters! This is a topic near and dear to all of our twisted little hearts.  So grab some popcorn and tune in. We'll discuss the monsters, the films, the actors, you name it. Who was your favorite monster? Favorite film? Which actor did you enjoy the most as the Frankenstein Monster? Listen in and share your thoughts with us here or on our Twitter or Facebook pages.

Larry, Lord Blood-Rah, and Bob in the Monster Garage

Our guest Lord Blood-Rah has some great events coming up. On Saturday, September 1st, you can catch Lord Blood-Rah's Nerve Wrackin' Theater live at the Chouinard Winery in Castro Valley, CA for a classic monster double feature: Universal's Dracula and Frankenstein. The films will be shown outdoors when the sun sets, so bring a picnic basket, and enjoy some of the fine wines available.

On October 13th, in Peoria, IL, Lord Blood-Rah will present his Nerve Wrackin' Theater Halloween Horror Show at the Landmark Cinemas. His Lordship will present a variety of shorts followed by the classic Horror Express.  For more information, please see Lord Blood-Rah's page, http://www.lordbloodrah.com/events.html

  1. Good job Planet 8! I have fond memories of growing up on Creature Features, Universal Monsters, Hammer Films, Fangoria, Famous Monsters of Filmland and all that. It made me the ghoul I am today.

  2. Nothing wrong with ghouliing! We all do that! I am glad that near the end of his life Bob Wilkins got to see just how many lives he touched and influenced. As so many other horror hosts have and continue to til this day.

Stay tuned! Lord BloodRah returns in October for an episode on Horror Hosts that I think everyone will love!

  3. First, to me it's not "Universal Supernatural Monsters", it's "Universal MONSTERS". So The Creature fits in the group. C'mon he's not a puppy! If Universal says he's a monster, he's a monster!Second, the original Frankenstein dies when his brain is removed and replaced by Igor's. Igor is now the monster through the rest of the Universal Monster series. I think it's silly but... And finally films like "The Werewolf of London" and the "Paula the Ape Woman" series have also earned the right of being called "Universal MONSTERS". The Mole People, The Metaluna Alien, Phantom of the Opera are all Universal MONSTERS as well to me. BTW remember "House of Frankenstein 1997"? Oh and is Frankenstein the monster (Universal) or the Doctor (Hammer, book)? Anyway despite what I have said here it was a great, fun episode.Nice work!

  4. Hey Derek, thanks for listening and taking the time to share you thoughts! Glad you thought it was fun. This is the great thing about the Universal monsters, there is so much to discuss and debate. I think we could have easily gone another hour but we had to set a limit. If we had though, I would have loved to talk about Werewolf of London, The Mole People, Son of Dracula, Tarantula...and on and on. I think we may have to do some individual shows on certain monsters/movies. I know Bob would be up for a show on the Creech!

  5. Wow, this one went all over the board with me. First there's this: "A little furry Peter Lorrie coming at you on a moonlit night? That's scary." Rarely have truer words been spoken.
But then the dissing of the Star Trek animated series - sorry, man, in my book it's still better than Enterprise.

I'm not really mad, though. I really enjoyed your conversation, even though I'm not as well-versed in the Universal monsters as you guys are (although in my inexpert opinion, I'd include the Creature).

    1. Greetings EBos! Another for the Creesh being included as a Universal Monster! As I said before, I have to agree, he always has and always will be one to me! Had to lol when I read your reaction to a Wolfman version of Peter Lorrie lol. I will also agree with you on the Star Trek Animated series vs Entereise. I wonder what are your thoughts on BSG? I love the original and really love the reimagined version but the 1984 version left much to desire for me... any how, thanks for continuing to listen and be part of the discussion!!

    2. Hi Larry. original BSG: all us kids loved it, obviously, back in the day and watched it religiously, but I have to say, it hasn't held up for me as well. The topic recently came up in the comments over at the Atomic Junk Shop (http://atomicjunkshop.com/) where I pointed out - and I know this may sound blasphemous in some quarters - that now I would actually prefer watching any episode of season-1 Buck Rogers over BSG. And yeah, that follow-up in which they found Earth was, erm, not so good.
The reimagined series is quite good, though - at least initially few seasons.

    3. Hey Edo, I hear ya. I haven’t actually watched an episode of original BSG in a while. I suppose I just kind of sugarcoat things as I reminisce about them, talk about reminiscing about things, I haven’t seen an episode of Buck Rogers in more than 20 years! It would be interesting to see a “reimagined” Buck Rogers. Hey thanks again for the comments and conversation.

  7. Great podcast all ... sorry I’m a little late to the game.

I hope you delve further into the monsters. I am curious what you think about them being embraced throughout pop culture - from The Groovie Ghoulies and Monster Cereal to the Marvel comics (Dracula, Werewolf By Night, etc). Did their popularity actually shift their impact? For example, I saw Abbott & Costello monster movies prior to the “scary” movies so they never hit me the way they were probably intended. I imagine that kids raised on cartoons and the Munsters had a much different perspective on the Universal movies.

On the other hand, the Invisible Man freaked me out as a kid ... what could be scarier than a villain that could be here, there, or anywhere?

I also am on board with the Creature; I first saw his movie in 3D on the Son of Svengoolie show in Chicago.

In regards to actors, I always thought William Holden would have made a good Werewolf and Talbot. That is stepping outside the genre for actors but I think he could have pulled it off. I also think John Dall from Rope and Spartacus may have made a good Dracula.

    Once again...Cheers! Keep ‘em coming!

  8. The Universal Monsters just seem to continue on in popularity. Whether it is Halloween costumes, decorations and cards at Target or Halloween Horror Nights w/the Monsters maze at Universal or even the Super 7 figures or continuing Mondo product. But, I can see the more merchandised and homogenized something gets, the more diluted the original product becomes.

With the recent release of 30 Classic Universal movies on BluRay, hopefully there will be a newer appreciation for the films themselves. Plus continuous exposure on TCM and MeTV’s Svengoolie.

They’ve been around for almost 90 years now. So they’ve definitely stood the test of time. And I’m sure will be back on the podcast again....
