  1. Our Chief Engineer Bob had asked about the surprise ending of Solo, **Spoiler Alert**
The appearance of Darth Maul. Karen and I explained a little what happens to Maul based on watching the animated tv series The Clone Wars And Rebels But Here’s a great article on how this happened. https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/films/970372/Star-Wars-Solo-movie-Darth-Maul-dead-alive-Crimson-Dawn-Obi-Wan-killed-box-office

  2. O.k. I haven't seen this yet, and before listening to your show, my interest was rather lukewarm, but now you've all got me quite interested.
First and foremost, I have to say I'm increasingly curious about Glover's portrayal of Lando, because Lando has always been one of my favorite Star Wars characters. In fact, contrary to the opinion of many it seems, I thought he was really the hero in Empire: he was really between a rock and hard place, and had a whole city under his charge, but he still managed to salvage quite a bit out of that situation. I'm also really miffed that he hasn't appeared in any of these new movies. If nothing else, that whole sequence in Canto Bight would have been a perfect place to bring him back into the action. Heck, the next off-year Star Wars movie should be about Lando - better him than the most overrated character ever, Boba Fett.
Also, I enjoyed your brief discussion of the troubling way droids are treated in the SW universe - yes, they are apparently sentient, and often even display a sense of humor, yet they're treated like appliances. If this Solo movie goes at least some way toward addressing that matter, that's another check in its favor. By the way, I'm a bit of a fan of IG88, and also wouldn't mind a movie about him leading a revolt of the droids against their shoddy treatment. That video you linked on your FB page was amusing, but if you haven't already, you should check out this one, in which we see that IG88 is also a great dancer.
And before I forget: the Star Wars Holiday Special is canon and that's that.

O.k., this comment has gone on way too long, given that I haven't even seen the movie in question, and that I'm really not even as big a fan of Star Wars as I used to be. I'm more of a Star Trek guy, and that reminds me: I have to tell Karen that an offhand observation she made in a post at the BAB a few years ago (her review of the comic adaptation of Ellison's original script for "The City on the Edge of Forever") inspired me to write a whole damn post, which you can read at the Atomic Junk Shop.
So good job on another podcast everyone.

  3. Great episode again. I agree about Solo; I thought it was pretty good overall ... on my own personal scale, I'd probably rank it above Rogue One and maybe Last Jedi, though Last Jedi had more importance to the overall Star Wars universe.

I like the comment about the "seamy underbelly" that we see here; it's cool to see Han in his original milieu of gangsters and hustlers. Bossk even got a mention, though I'm disappointed we didn't get to see him. (I think they tried to work him in but just couldn't make it work; they said he'd be in a sequel, if there is one.) I'd love to see a sequel, one that brings Han right up to the moment he walks into that cantina in Mos Eisley; I want to know what happens to Q'ira (as for Darth Maul's fate, that's already been settled in Rebels).

I thought Donald Glover was great as Lando; in his first scene at the sabaac match he was really channeling Billy Dee Williams ... less so as the movie went on. I also loved how Han dealt with Beckett ... no question as to who shot first there!

Ann Crispin did a book trilogy (no longer in canon, if it ever was) that gave a great origin story for Han; I think this movie is a pretty good successor to those novels, even though the details are different.

  4. Hey Edo, thanks for making the time to leave a comment. We appreciate the feedback -although I hope we didn't spoil Solo for you! I have to admit I'm a little dismayed with the poor showing it's had at the box office. Whether it's people upset over Last Jedi, worried by all the negative rumors, or just not interested in a Han Solo movie not starring Harrison Ford, it's obvious it didn't have the pull Disney/Lucasfilm expected. I wonder what impact this will have on future films? But I can't say I am too excited about more films on the early days of existing characters; I'd rather see new films with entirely new characters. I think this is why Star Wars Rebels was so good.

I also read your post over at the Atomic Junk Shop and really enjoyed it. I haven't thought about Generations much lately ( I did see Insurrection for the first time in years the other day and it was still terrible) but all your remarks were spot-on. I think Generations suffers from meddling by the actors (Shatner must have horses in it), just like Nemesis did, and to some degree Insurrection did too. But the death of Merritt Buttrick and Bibi Besch's illness may also have contributed. In any case, I sort of feel the whole plot was poorly conceived and certainly not a good send off for Kirk. They could have kept the TOS crew out of it and I would have been happy with ST6 as their final appearance.

Good work over at Atomic Junk Shop -I have it bookmarked now!

  5. Karen, don't worry about spoilers, that stuff usually doesn't diminish my enjoyment of a movie in any case.
As for Generations, yeah, like I said in my post: ultimately, the movie probably shouldn't have happened in the first place. It just wasn't that good, and Undiscovered Country was a perfect send-off for the original crew.
Otherwise, though, I don't think Insurrection is that bad - I like it better than Generations, that's for sure. In fact, I'd say the only Trek film I actively don't like at all is Nemesis - too somber and depressing. I watched it once and that's it, while even the others that I didn't like as much, like Final Frontier and Generations, are still - moslty - watchable.

  6. Edo I agree with both your points, love the holiday special and agree with both your points about IG88, he’s a great dancer and it would be very interesting to see his origin story, now that we have some insight into droid and their feelings of oppression.

Karen, we should talk about a potential new podcast, although I did like Revel, I loved the clone wars animated series, if the story is done right and character her develop that are interesting, or we go back and tell early stories of younger versions of characters, I think it’s a good thing if done right. Although I do still have a problem with the young avengers comic book, LOL

Mike I agree, would have been nice to see more Bossk, he was in either clone wars or rebels, the animated series, I’m not sure which one, he could’ve been both?

Thanks again guys for tuning in and commenting here, will talk to you guys again real soon!
