Episode 19: Geeks in Garages Drinking Blue Milk

Pull up a chair and join us -today Larry, Bob, Karen, and their guest, Henry San Miguel from the Geek Speak Show are engaged in a lively discussion that ranges from what's right and what's wrong with The Last Jedi (and we promise, this is our LAST Last Jedi discussion!), to super-hero films, including thoughts on Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice (can you guess which one of the crew is a fan of this film?). We also talk about the changing face of fandom, and Henry shares some news about cons the Geek Speak crew will be at later this year.

So give it a listen and tell us what you think - are you excited for Episode 9 or not feeling it? Who should Rey's parents be? Was Batman V. Superman great or awful? We want to hear your thoughts!

Thanks for Listening!

  1. A great big long geek discussion - I thoroughly enjoyed it even if I didn't have my own pitcher of blue milk to drink while listening.

Anyway, to answer Larry's question posed at the end of the show:
    1. I thought Last Jedi was pretty good; I wasn't as put off by the things a lot of hardcore SW fans have apparently been complaining about, maybe just because I'm more no longer the SW fan I used to be (Karen already knows this, but I am firmly in team Star Trek in that regard). As for Rey's parentage, I like the idea that they're 'nobodies,' i.e., that she's not some secret Skywalker (or Solo) kin, or perhaps a member of the Kenobi family or something like that, rather her parents were just ordinary, average denizens of that long-ago, far-away galaxy.

    2. Before I even heard Karen's response to the Batman v Superman question, i.e., how to change or fix it, the first thought that popped into my head was: 'don't make a movie called Batman vs. Superman' or any movie that's centered around a big throwdown between those two. I would have been perfectly happy with a movie called "World's Finest" and all that name implies. I actually just watched (most of) BvS very recently - last week - and I can say that the only parts of the movie that I kind of liked, that got me to pay attention, were when Gal Gadot was on screen, either as Wonder Woman or as Diana Prince. She's the only interesting and compelling character in that movie by far. I have almost the same opinion of Justice League: when WW, and also Aquaman, are on screen and doing something, it's cool, otherwise, not so much.
And that ties into my view of the wider DC cinematic universe and how to fix it, which you guys also touched upon: I think that's already being done to some extent. Both Wonder Woman and Aquaman were successful, and mostly enjoyable movies, and I think if the DC movies keep going in that direction, i.e., making solidly enjoyable one-off movies with some of their major heroes, they can fix the mess of the past few years. We'll see how the Shazam movie turns out, but I also think they should reboot Green Lantern, using John Stewart this time instead of Hal Jordan, and follow the example of the best parts of Wonder Woman and Aquaman. Also, I think the TV Supergirl should also get her own movie and intermingle with the other movie universe characters. I think they would then have the basis for a far more enjoyable and interesting Justice League, sans Superman and Batman - as I understand, both Cavill and Affleck don't want to reprise their roles going forward anyway, so it's better to just drop the characters rather than recast them yet again.

  2. Seems like Batman will be eternally rebooted. Like a constant Groundhog Day-like loop. But, I think people are used to that by now. Like different Bonds.

I think Cavill could be pursuaded to return to the cape if nothing bigger (Bond?) comes along.

I really have no faith in Shazam, and think The MCU will have the superior Captain Marvel. But, I’ll give it a chance.

Separating the TV and cinematic worlds always bugs me. Whether it’s Marvel or DC. I couldn’t get into Barry Allen/Flash in Justice League, because I’m so used to Grant Gustin’s version on TV. Might have been an interesting segue to bring Grant’s Flash Into Justice League. But, it’s the age old Hollywood phobia of TV vs Theatrical.

    1. Well, for me it goes without saying that the MCU Capt. Marvel will be better than the Shazam version, but then again, I think the MCU movies are the gold standard for superhero features. Even the 'bad' ones that people often cite, like Iron Man III or the Dark World, are still (re)watchable and have enjoyable parts. In fact, on the topic of Iron Man III, I often like to point out that it has arguably the best scene in any superhero movie ever: when IM rescues all of those people who got sucked out of that airplane's fuselage. There's no better demonstration of what superheroes are all about and why we geeks like them so much.

Anyway, I'm cautiously optimistic about the Shazam movie, and will go into with an open mind.
